GENERAL INFORMATION

COUNTIES SERVED:

Northwestern University Traffic Safety School serves the following counties in Illinois: Cook, Jefferson, McLean and Shelby Counties.  If you have received a ticket in one of the counties we service, you may be eligible to take Traffic Safety School to avoid a conviction being listed on your driving record.

The Circuit Court of each county determines the classes available, the time frame available for students to complete their class, the fees charged and the eligibility of particular defendants to take Traffic Safety School for removal of traffic violations from their driving records.  For particular information on your eligibility and fees, please call Traffic Safety School at (847) 467-6820 or contact your local County Circuit Court

If you have received a ticket in a county or jurisdiction not listed above you may be eligible to attend Traffic Safety School at one of our class locations.  It is your responsibility to contact the Circuit Court in the County you received the violation to determine your eligibility to attend Traffic Safety School.  It is also your responsibility to notify the Circuit Court of your completion of Traffic Safety School, and to provide a copy of your Certificate of Completion as proof you attended Traffic Safety School.  Complete the Volunteer Enrollment Form and mail or fax it to Traffic Safety School along with your payment for enrollment.

If you have received a ticket in one of the counties we service and choose to take your class outside of the area serviced by Northwestern University Traffic Safety School it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to select a class that fits your needs. The court requires that you complete a driver safety class.  You may take a state certified driver safety course or a course offered by the National Safety Council. See www.nsc.org for class locations in your area. Video or home study courses are not accepted by the court.  Any fee charged by another agency is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. You must complete your course by the assigned deadline.  When you have completed your class, you must send the original certificate to:

         Registration Coordinator

         Traffic Safety School

1007 Church Street, LL01

Evanston, IL 60204-3067

Traffic Safety School will report your course completion to the court and return your certificate.

Students taking courses outside of the Traffic Safety School area must take a state certified or National Safety Council 4-hour or 8-hour course.  In order to receive credit for any other course, students must obtain prior approval.  To obtain this approval, the student must submit written material describing the course to the Traffic Safety School, Instruction Manager.  Do not take a course until written approval is granted.

All Traffic Safety School Fees are non-refundable.

HOW TICKETS ARE PROCESSED:

If you have received a ticket in one of the counties we serve, the Circuit Court will receive your ticket payment and post your fees.  When the fees are posted by the Court the registration form attached to your ticket will be sent to Traffic Safety School for enrollment into a class.

Whenever possible we will meet your stated preferences for day and class locations. Traffic Safety School classes are offered in English.  Certain classes are also offered in Cook County in Spanish and Polish.

Traffic Safety School will mail the course notification to the address listed on your registration form.  This process generally takes 3 to 6 weeks.

If you have requested Traffic Safety School and have not received your course notification after 6 weeks, please call Traffic Safety School at (847) 467-6820 or e-mail us at trafficschool@northwestern.edu to check your status.  It is your responsibility to notify Traffic Safety School if you change your mailing address.  Traffic Safety School is not responsible for late, lost or undeliverable mail.

ATTENDING TRAFFIC SAFETY SCHOOL:

Go to your assigned Traffic Safety School class.  Please be prompt—no one will be admitted after the class begins.  No guests, no children, no pets, no cell phones, no sunglasses and no hats or caps will be permitted in class.  A hearing impaired interpreter will be provided for the class upon request.  A Certificate of Completion will be issued to you as proof of attendance.  Your certificate includes your address as listed on your registration form.  If you lose your certificate and require a duplicate Certificate of Completion there is a $15 fee for duplicate certificates.

If you are late for class, miss a portion of class or fail to attend class, you must reschedule immediately into another class.  To reschedule your class, call Traffic Safety School as soon as possible.  A reschedule fee will apply and must be paid before you will be rescheduled into another class.

If you cannot attend the class you are assigned, please call, fax or e-mail Traffic Safety School immediately to reschedule into a different class.  A rescheduling fee may apply if you fail to reschedule before the “grace date” that is printed on your class notification form.

FAILURE TO COMPLY:

The Circuit Court of each county determines the time period available for students to complete their Traffic Safety School class.  Generally, this period is between four and six months.  FAILURE TO COMPLETE YOUR TRAFFIC SAFETY SCHOOL CLASS WITHIN THAT PERIOD MAY RESULT IN A CONVICTION BEING ENTERED AGAINST YOUR OFFICIAL DRIVING RECORD.  CONVICTION MAY RESULT IN THE SUSPENSION OF YOUR DRIVING PRIVILEGES AND MAY AFFECT YOUR AUTOMOBILE INSURANCE COSTS.

If you fail to complete your assigned Traffic Safety School class within the time frame allotted by the Court you must contact the Circuit Court where you received your ticket.

You must go to Court and petition the Court to have your conviction vacated.  You may request an extension of the time available to complete Traffic Safety School.  The court may charge additional fees for this process.  Once you request and are granted additional time by the Court to complete your class a re-enrollment fee will apply. The re-enrollment fee must be paid to Traffic Safety School before you will be enrolled into a new class.  If the time available for you to complete your class has expired Traffic Safety School cannot re-enroll you until you have petitioned the court for additional time to complete your class.
