A dream come true - Those four words capture
the very essence of my feelings on the day that I was notified by Dean
Thomas Gibbons that I was selected as the new Executive Director of
Northwestern University’s Center for Public Safety. It is truly an honor,
not only because of the Center’s reputation for excellence in the law
enforcement community, but also because as a part of Northwestern’s School
of Continuing Studies, we are upholding the tradition of excellence of a
world class University.
I remember when I attended courses at the Center for Public Safety, how
impressed I was with the remarkable education I was receiving and how much I
respected the critical importance of its mission - advancing excellence for
public safety professionals. When I later returned as an adjunct instructor
in the highly acclaimed School of Police Staff and Command, I remember Ed
Pope, then Director of Management Training, reminding me that I would be
held accountable and that a position in a University such as Northwestern
had to be earned. His statement still resonates with me today.
The reputation of the Center for Public Safety as the premiere professional
development institute for public safety leaders has been earned. I am proud
of the continued commitment of the faculty and staff. Advancing excellence
is the legacy that we have inherited and that we cherish. It has been forged
through the hard work and dedication of world renowned leaders starting with
General Franklin Kreml whose vision created the center and continuing
through Alexander Weiss, my predecessor.
Our vision at the Center for Public Safety is to continue to provide the
outstanding education that you have come to expect. Additionally, we will
provide new programs to respond to the urgent needs that face our
communities, nation and world such as those presented in our Executive
Leadership Series.

In addition to our traditional programs, we are developing new credit and
certificate programs in partnership with the School of Continuing Studies.
These new programs will provide more opportunities for you to advance in
your career. Because you requested it, additional distance learning formats
will be launched next spring.
This is an exciting time at the Center for Public Safety. I am fortunate to
work with a superior team, led by Deputy Director Cameron Fisher. I look
forward to working with you to enhance your knowledge or skills so that you
may advance within the public safety profession.
“Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest
abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream, which
fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and greater strength
for our nation.” |
