When we recently announced the formation of the Franklin M. KremI Society at Northwestern University our intention was to celebrate the legacy of an extraordinary individual. Our thanks to those who have contributed.

Franklin M. KremI was born January 11, 1907, in Chicago. He attended Northwestern University on scholarship and while working full-time as an Evanston police officer, enrolled at John Marshall Law School, where he received his Juris Doctor with honors in 1932. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army as chief of the highway division Mediterranean theater, and held other important transportation posts, attaining a rank of brigadier general. He received five decorations, including the U.S. Legion of Merit and Honorary Officer, Order of the British Empire.

As an Evanston police officer (1924-35), General KremI rose through the ranks to division commander, establishing an Accident Prevention Bureau that received national attention for its dramatic reduction of fatal and serious accidents. This led to the founding in 1936 of the Northwestern University Traffic Institute (later to become the Center for Public Safety) and the Traffic Safety Division of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, both directed by General KremI. In 1955 Northwestern appointed General KremI to head a new Transportation Center and in 1962 Northwestern’s board of trustees appointed General Kreml vice president for planning and development.

Membership in the Kreml Society is open to individuals and groups that make annual contributions of $250 or more. In return for their gifts, members will receive special recognition in Center publications and receive invitations to Center events. Contributions of $1,000 or more will qualify donors as charter members of the Society. The names of Charter members will be inscribed on a special commemorative plaque. We are particularly pleased and thankful for the substantial gift from Mrs. Barbara Kreml that inaugurated the society.

We invite you to accept this opportunity to become a member of the Franklin Kreml Society.  This new organization will both honor the center's founder and help us to continue his important work.
