Dramatic growth in the fields of corporate and industrial security has created a demand for security professionals to develop their skills in management and leadership. This growth within the security profession necessitates a professional development program that can build leadership skills and competencies through a blend of academic and practical education. Northwestern University’s Center for Public Safety which has been training and educating public service professionals for over for 70 years is pleased to offer the same quality instruction and curriculum to the security industry.
AUDIENCE
This program is a priority for security professionals at middle to upper management level who are seeking improvement in their business knowledge and management skills in order to prepare for executive level positions within their organization.
PROGRAM FORMAT
SMLI is a nine-month, evening session program that utilizes a blended learning model. Students will learn both in the classroom and online. Classroom requirements include one night a week and full day sessions on one Friday and Saturday per core course. At other junctures, on-line learning and collaboration will take place. Students will also have the option to spend three Saturdays in an ASIS certification exam review and may elect additional college credit classes during elective periods.

The SMLI program is broken into three core sessions and two elective periods:
Core Course #1: Organizational Behavior (six weeks)

Elective #1: Business Administration (six weeks, select one of three courses)
- Brand management
- Finance and accounting for non-financial managers
- Ethics and compliance
Core Course #2: Leadership and Management (six weeks)
- Leadership
- Historic perspectives
- Decision making
Elective #2: Business Administration (six weeks, select one of three courses)
- Writing for a business audience
- Principles of business process management
- Ethics and compliance
Core Course #3: Human Relations in the Workplace (six weeks)

COURSE SCHEDULE
The format for SMLI will consist of a nine-month program broken into five sessions:
- Core course 1 (Friday, 4/3 – week of 5/4)
- Elective period 1 (week of 5/18 – week of 6/22)
- Core pourse 2 (Friday, 7/10 – week of 8/10)
- Elective period 2 (week of 8/24 – week of 9/28)
- Core course 3 (Friday, 10/16 – week of 11/16)
Core Course Format
During the core course periods (core courses 1,2,3) the class will begin with full day sessions on the first Friday and Saturday of the course period. For example, the schedule for core course 1 would be:
Week 1
Friday, 4/3 from 8:30 am – 4:30 p.m.
Saturday, 4/4 from 8:30 am – 4:30 p.m.
Weeks 2 - 6
One evening session from 6 – 9 p.m.
Elective Period Format
During the elective periods (elective periods 1 and 2) classes will meet one evening per week for six weeks. Sessions will run from 6 – 9 p.m.
There are no full day sessions during the elective periods.
